Our recent clients in Prosper, Texas came to us with a clear vision: they wanted their bedroom to feel like their favorite beach vacation spot—light, relaxed, and rejuvenating. At the same time, they were ready to upgrade their traditional furniture to something more contemporary, while incorporating just enough contrast to complement the black ceiling beams that define the space.

The result is a serene and sophisticated coastal-inspired bedroom that blends comfort, elegance, and practicality- while they wanted a light, airy space it had to be able to hold up to small children and a dog. Here is how we brought their dream room to life.

The Inspiration: A Beach Destination

Every successful design starts with a story, and for this project, that story began with a hotel. Our clients had fallen in love with the calming colors, textures, and atmosphere of a coastal town they visited, and the details from the hotel they stayed in became the inspiration I used as a foundation for the room’s design.

But rather than going full “beach theme,” my goal was to evoke the feeling of being on vacation—without relying on seashells and anchors. Think refined coastal: clean lines, natural textures, a breezy color scheme, and just enough contrast to keep things grounded.

Setting the Tone: The Color Palette

To create the light and airy environment our clients wanted, we leaned into a soft, neutral color palette with accents of green and an orange that looks like the color of the sky at sunset.

The key accent colors included:

  • Soft Sand – seen in the natural wood tones of the nightstands, natural linen bed, and the bedding

  • Blue/Green – used sparingly in artwork

  • Terricotta - lamp bases and artwork

  • Black – used as an accent to echo the ceiling beams and add contemporary contrast.

This balance of softness and depth gave the room a grounded yet ethereal feel.

Furniture Selections: Contemporary Comfort

Our clients were ready to move on from their more traditional bedroom set and embrace a more contemporary aesthetic. I selected pieces that combined streamlined silhouettes with subtle details to keep the room feeling both fresh and inviting.

The Bed

I started with an upholstered platform bed in a soft performance linen, with a slightly curved headboard that added a gentle, cloud-like form to the space. The color is a warm, sandy beige that reminded us of a beach at low tide. Because the living room has a view into the bedroom, I chose a bed with a footboard to make the view of the bed from the living room look cleaner.

The bed is layered with white bedding which always gives a hotel feel, and a blanket with faded black stripes. Instead of several throw pillows to have to take on and off the bed every day, there is just one long lumbar pillow that repeats the pinky/orange accent color of the lamps plus the touch of black the homeowners wanted sprinkled around the room.

Nightstands and Storage

The nightstands were chosen for their light oak finish, white marble tops, and width that almost completely filled the space between the bed and adjacent walls. They offer just the right mix of contemporary and natural, and their subtle curves are my favorite details about them.

Across the room, a six-drawer dresser in a slightly darker wood tone created functional storage while keeping with the soft color scheme. Above it is a mirror with a black frame that repeats the curves found in other elements in the room.

The bench

The homeowners both travel for work so they wanted an easy place to pack an open suitcase that would eliminate the habit of laying it open on the bed. So I chose a bench for the foot of the bed that is wide enough to hold a suitcase and in a fabric that will wipe easily if the suitcase wheels get it dirty. The bench also gives a spot to sit and adds to the welcoming vibe of the room.

Incorporating Black for Balance

One of the homeowner’s key requests was to tie in the black ceiling beams, a dramatic architectural feature in an otherwise light room. Rather than overpowering the space with dark furniture, we chose to use black as a subtle accent, letting it anchor the design without competing for attention.

Black details included:

  • Planter pot and vase

  • Drawer hardware in matte black finishes

  • A simple black picture frame for the wall art next to the tree

  • A black framed mirror above the dresser

  • A throw blanket with soft black stripes

These accents brought just enough contrast to the space to create a sense of sophistication and tie the entire design together. The result is a space that feels layered and intentional.

The Finished Look

The final design is a perfect blend of coastal inspiration and contemporary style. It’s light and airy, just like the clients wanted, but with enough grounding elements to create depth. The black accents don’t overpower the space—they enhance it, connecting the eye to the ceiling beams and adding visual balance.

Most importantly, the room feels like them. It’s the kind of space where they can wake up feeling refreshed and go to sleep feeling at peace.
