HOW TO DISPLAY A COLLECTION OF SMALL ITEMS

I have a rock collection, and I used to keep some rocks in a box, some in the garage, and some on display in random places around the house. Brooke gave me this idea to make them special, prominent and unexpected, and it transformed a previously boring corner in our home office area.

Various rocks on a wooden surface. Some rocks are left natural and some have been carved into animals. The ones seen in the photo include a frog, dinosaur, donkey, hippo, dog, bat, elephant, camel, stingray and horse.

My rock collection

I put a round table in the corner, pointed a standing lamp down at it like a spotlight, and I arranged all of my rocks on the table. I have a bunch of rocks so far and I get more on every trip we take, so the table is full and it’s obvious that its only purpose is to hold up my rocks.

My rock collection is one of my favorite things now. I love that I took something that might normally be put out of the way and gave it so much attention. It’s made the process of finding new rocks even more fun, and I love getting home from trips and arranging them on the table. At this point it kind of feels like an evolving art project, and it’s really satisfying to keep working on it.

I love Brooke’s focus of making interior design so personal, and helping people to have homes that reflect their favorite parts of life. A rock collection may not sound like much, but every time I look at mine I remember some trip we took, a place we’ve lived, an experience with my family, something I accomplished, or someone I love. I’m glad these aren’t hidden away in a box somewhere.

Brooke helped me choose this antique wooden table to display my collection.

Joan Elmore

I’m Brooke’s twin sister! I make sure our business runs efficiently, and in a way that best serves you. I have extensive experience in the construction industry, where I managed finances, personnel and operations. I love reading, writing and watching movies, and my favorite part of my home is the living room, because that’s where I relax. My goal when working with you is to make sure the parts of your project that could typically cause stress stay well managed so you can fully enjoy the interior design process.
